An online video generator, or a dubbing tool on your device
HeyGen is an online AI video generator. Besides avatar videos, its video translator turns a video you upload, or a YouTube link, into 175+ languages with a cloned voice and lip sync [1]. OpenDub does one part of that: it dubs a video file you already have, and the separation, timing, mixing and rendering run on your own device [4]. As a HeyGen alternative it is narrower, and it is open source.

When HeyGen fits better
A HeyGen alternative is not always the better pick. Choose HeyGen if one of these is you.
- You need lip sync. HeyGen syncs the lips to the new language [1]; OpenDub does not change the picture.
- You need a language OpenDub does not have. HeyGen lists 175+ languages and dialects [1]; OpenDub has 17.
- You want several languages from one click. HeyGen translates into up to 10 target languages at once [1].
- Your video is a YouTube link. HeyGen takes a link [1]; OpenDub needs the file.
- You also want avatar videos. HeyGen makes them [1]; OpenDub has none.
- Your team needs a shared workspace. HeyGen's Business plan adds members, shared billing and SSO [2].
When this HeyGen alternative fits better
- The video should not leave your device. With this HeyGen alternative, only speech clips and text go to the voice model you choose [4][5].
- You want no account. OpenDub needs none, and signing in unlocks nothing [4].
- You want to read or change the code. OpenDub is open source under AGPL-3.0-or-later, and every step is plain code you can run yourself [4][6].
- You want a free voice on your own computer. OmniVoice runs in the OpenDub app at about 15–35 seconds a line on a laptop CPU, for non-commercial use [4].
- Your videos are long. The app on your computer has no length limit [4].
- You want to fix single lines. In the app you can change one line's translation, tone or timing and re-dub only that line [4].
What this HeyGen alternative does not do
- No lip sync. It replaces the voice and leaves the picture as it is.
- 17 languages, not hundreds: English, 简体中文, 繁體中文, 日本語, 한국어, Español, Français, Deutsch, Português, Italiano, Русский, हिन्दी, Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Melayu, Tiếng Việt, ไทย, العربية.
- No links. It works on a video file on your own device.
- No avatars and no video from a script.
- The free cloned voice is slower and for non-commercial use. Cloning the voice in the browser needs your own paid key and stops at five minutes, and the free phone voice is a stock voice in 10 of the 17 languages. The Mac download is for Apple Silicon.
What about ElevenLabs dubbing?
ElevenLabs Dubbing is a hosted service that dubs content in 90+ languages in a voice clone of the original speaker; it has a free plan and paid plans from $6 a month [3]. OpenDub can use ElevenLabs as its voice: with your own ElevenLabs API key it uses ElevenLabs' Scribe and instant voice cloning, and you pay ElevenLabs directly [4]. ElevenLabs has no translation model, so OpenDub translates with a Higgs Audio key or, without one, with Chrome's built-in translator where available [4]. Or skip both keys and use this HeyGen alternative with the free OmniVoice in the app on your computer.

Is OpenDub a free HeyGen alternative?
As a HeyGen alternative, the software is free and open source (AGPL-3.0-or-later) and needs no account. The free voice, OmniVoice, runs in the OpenDub app on your computer, for non-commercial use. Does this HeyGen alternative sync the lips?
No. OpenDub replaces the voice and leaves the picture as it is. Each dubbed line is timed to last as long as the speaker took to say it. HeyGen's video translator does lip sync.
Is my video uploaded?
Not with this HeyGen alternative. The video stays on your device; only speech clips and text go to the voice model you choose. With HeyGen you upload the video or paste a YouTube link.
How many languages does this HeyGen alternative dub into?
