Licences.
Last updated 25 October 2026. OpenDub is free software under the GNU Affero General Public License, version 3 or later; its source is at gitlab.com/open-dubapp/OpenDub. The desktop downloads also carry other people's software under their own licences. This page lists the parts of the current downloads that are under the GNU General Public License (GPL), and how to get their source. Every other licence is listed in NOTICE in the source.
GPL parts in the current downloads
- OpenDub for Mac, OpenDub-full.dmg 1.0.4 (the current Mac download) carries
ffmpegandffprobe7.1.1, a prebuilt FFmpeg from osxexperts.net configured with--enable-gpl --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265. FFmpeg built that way is distributed under the GPL, version 2 or later. - The same disk image, and the 1.0.5 release candidates, carry the Python package PyAV 15.1.0 (BSD-3-Clause), whose wheel brings its own FFmpeg 7.1 libraries (
libavcodecand the rest, inav/.dylibs) built with--enable-libx264 --enable-libx265, andlibx264andlibx265themselves. x264 and x265 are under the GPL, version 2 or later, and so are those FFmpeg libraries as built. In the 1.0.5 release candidates the app's ownffmpegandffprobeare an LGPL build made from source; its sources are attached to each release asffmpeg-lgpl-sources.tar. - OpenDub for Windows, OpenDub-Setup-full.exe 1.0.3 (the current Windows download), and the 1.0.5 release candidates:
ffmpeg.exeandffprobe.exeare a prebuilt FFmpeg 7.1 “essentials” build from gyan.dev, configured with--enable-gpl --enable-version3 --enable-libx264 --enable-libx265, distributed under the GPL, version 3 or later. The installer also carries PyAV with its FFmpeg DLLs,libx264andlibx265, as on the Mac.
OpenDub only runs these programs and libraries; the GPL applies to them as they are, and OpenDub's own code stays under the AGPL. The OpenDub app from the Mac App Store carries none of them.
Getting the source
Written offer. For at least three years from the last day we distribute an installer that contains these components, we will give anyone who asks a complete, machine-readable copy of the corresponding source code of the GPL components listed above, by download or on a medium customarily used for software interchange, for no more than our cost of providing it. Write to hello@opendub.app and name the installer and its version.
The same source is also published by the projects themselves:
- FFmpeg: ffmpeg.org/download.html
- x264: code.videolan.org/videolan/x264
- x265: bitbucket.org/multicoreware/x265_git
- PyAV, and the FFmpeg build its wheels carry: github.com/PyAV-Org/PyAV, github.com/PyAV-Org/pyav-ffmpeg
- The Mac FFmpeg build: osxexperts.net. The Windows FFmpeg build: gyan.dev/ffmpeg/builds
The licence texts: GNU GPL, version 2 and GNU GPL, version 3.
What changes next
The next versions of the Mac and Windows apps are planned to leave PyAV out, and the Windows app to move to an LGPL FFmpeg build, as the Mac app's own ffmpeg already has. Until those versions are released, this page describes the downloads above.
